Overview
Sturgeon Bay adopted several Wisconsin state building codes, with amendments, including: "Chs. COMM 20—25 Uniform Dwelling Code; Chs. COMM 61—65 Wisconsin Commercial Building Code; Ch. COMM 66 Multifamily Code; Ch. COMM 69 ADA Code; Ch. COMM 70 Historic Buildings Code; Chs. COMM 75—79 Existing Buildings Code." Sturgeon Bay Municpal Code, Ch. 15, § 15.02 (accessed 7/11/2014). Note that the codes have since been renumbered by the state.
The Wisconsin residential code is a statewide code that applies to new construction, additions and alterations for buildings constructed after 1980. Wis. Adm. Code § SPS 320.04 Applications (accessed 7/9/2014). The code in effect at the time of permit or the time of construction applies. Id. Sturgeon Bay extended application of the state code to residences "where initial construction permits were issued prior to June 1, 1980." Permits are not required for "[a]ll work which affects the occupancy, area, structural strength, fire protection, exits, light or ventilation of the building requires a permit. Minimum repairs or alterations which are less than $500.00 in value (of labor and materials) do not require a permit if they do not affect the occupancy, area, structural strength, fire protection, exits, lights or ventilation of a building."
